Replace "Wear Parts" As Needed.  We hit on inspecting wear parts in used auto parts in #4 above...now it's time to swap all of those out.  Items like the thermostat, water pump, seals, and spark plugs will need to be installed into the used engine now.  Refer to the OEM guidelines for all the recommended replacements.  You'll also want to check out and replace bad water lines and vacuum hoses now.  This is just the best practice when replacing a part with a used auto part.  You can make it "like new" by replacing these components. 4. Prime it before you start it.  You always need to prime the engine oil system before attempting to start your used engine.  This will be true for used auto parts or if you are going with a reman. Refer to OEM guidelines, or check on YouTube for a video of this process. 5.  Double Check it.  You'll want to go back through and ensure you've got your installation dialed in.  Ensure the cooling system and electrical systems are online and ready rock. 6.  Final Parts Replacement. Now you can replace the valve cover gasket, install the cover and connect any final belts and hoses.  You should be ready to fire up your used engine and hit the road. It's no secret who these guys are or what they do.  They're the preeminent association for businesses to be recognized as ethical and upstanding or shady and underhanded.  They have a very thorough process of vetting automotive recyclers, junkyards, and  salvage yards, while handling complaints, and grading companies based on their reputation and actions.  It's not horribly difficult to be an "A+" member if you are professional and ethical in your sale and sitrinution of used auto parts.  I would look to these "A+" used auto parts dealers first.  You can search the website specifically by industry like, "Salvage Yards", "Junkyards", or by "used auto parts".  You can also identify the city you want to look at, like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins.   Automotive Recyclers Association – CAR/Gold Seal "Since 1943, the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) is an international trade association which has represented an industry dedicated to the efficient removal and reuse of automotive parts, and the safe disposal of inoperable motor vehicles."  "ARA services approximately 1,000 member companies through direct membership and over 2,000 other companies through our affiliated chapters. Suppliers of equipment and services to this industry complete ARA's membership. ARA is the only trade association serving the automotive recycling industry in 12 countries internationally." "ARA aims to further the automotive recycling industry (salvage yards) through various services and programs to increase public awareness of the industry's role in conserving the future through automotive recycling and to foster awareness of the industry's value as a high quality, low cost alternative for the automotive consumer. ARA encourages aggressive environmental management programs to assist member facilities in maintaining proper management techniques for fluid and solid waste materials generated from the disposal of motor vehicles." (4) ARA is a great organization, especially on a legislative level.  They are a very active organization in Washington to protect the interest of automotive recyclers and salvage yards. "Certified Automotive Recycler - Established in 1994, the CAR program was created to produce a set of standards for salvage yards best practices as well as environmental and safety issues and to provide guidance for member facilities in adhering to these standards. This program is one of the cornerstones of the ARA as the facilities participating strive to provide quality service and parts for the professional automotive recycling industry." "Gold Seal - The ARA Gold Seal program, available only to those ARA members who have completed CAR certification, ensures excellence in customer satisfaction through improved customer service, quality used auto parts with accurate descriptions, reliable on-time deliveries and written product warranties."  The above programs are designed specifically to separate junkyards and certify the most professional sellers of used auto patrs and truck parts.  Great salvage yards  are generally "Gold Seal" Certified, URG800 Accredited, or both.   United Recyclers Group – URG 8000 "Established in 1995, United Recyclers Group, LLC was created through the efforts of three dynamic auto recyclers. Their goal was to obtain more control over their parts data, and bring to the marketplace an inventory management system that was created by auto recyclers and salvage yards.  Today, the vision of these three used auto parts providers has formed the largest progressive group of auto recyclers in North America. With over 375 partners throughout the U.S. and Canada, URG has created one of the most proactive organizations for the professional salvage yard." Mission Statement - "To provide superior products and services to our partners, to connect all parties within the auto salvage industry to our members, and to help our members through cooperative buying, advertising, software programs and information services."  "To improve the quality of used auto parts and service, URG has created a set of standards called URG 8000. These standards are fashioned after the ISO 9000 certification program." The "URG8000" program for salvage yards is very comparable to the "Gold Seal" program from ARA.  The salvage yard or junkyard that is applying for the certification or accreditation has to go a thorough process of documentation, best practices implementation, and physical audits before they are in the club. Give us a call today or shop our online salvage yard and we'll help you get your vehicle back on the road asap!   Click Here to Search Quality Used Auto Parts Now!   Wed, 13 Apr 2022 06:00:00 GMT http://usedautopartsdenver.co/blog/8778/Which-Used-Auto-Parts-are-Available-at-Salvage-Yards- http://usedautopartsdenver.co/blog/8750/The-Life-Cycle-of-Used-Auto-Parts-at-Salvage-Yards-in-Denver blog Used Auto Parts - Wrecked Vehicles - Salvage Yards - Junkyards - Denver I am often asked questions about my salvage yard and business when people find out what I do for a living.  Most people don't have a lot of interactions with owners or employees of salvage yards.  I thought I'd take a few paragraphs to take any interested party through the process that our used auto parts go through before they end up at a dealership, body shop, or neighborhood garage.  Today's sales world is highly customer driven, competition has created shorter windows of time, lower prices, and hopefully better products.  Consumers expect to be able to get a product immediately, especially if it is in stock.  But with used auto parts, there is a "reverse manufacturing" process that has to take place before a part is ready for the consumer to put it to use.  Automotive salvage yards are not like Wal-Mart or an electronics store, which uses a "Built to Stock" production model.  This model allows the manufacturer to produce the product before the end customer is identified and stock X units that are ready to sell.  Do to warehousing and human resource limitations; salvage yards must use a "Built to Order" production model.  This model allows for the production of the product after it has been ordered.  There are simply too many parts on every vehicle that may or may not sell to have them all removed, cleaned, and stocked for sale.  The cost of a process like this would bankrupt any salvage yard that attempted it within months.  This is the reality of dismantling wrecked vehicles and selling used auto parts, sometimes it's not easy to communicate this process to the retail public but maybe this blog will help.  There are some exceptions, like all the quality used engines and used transmissions that are already removed and stocked in the warehouse.  We may also stock some remanufactured engines and remanufactured transmissions that will be shelf redy upon order.  But most used auto parts need to go through the normal order fulfillment process. Procurement So you've been in an accident, the insurance company has cut you a check or you have sold your vehicle to a salvage yard.  Hopefully, you did some research and got the vehicle to a reputable salvage yard who will recycle and dispose of it properly.  This is the first step in the process, we have to get our "raw inventory" from somewhere before we can begin our "reverse manufacturing" process.  I am using "reverse manufacturing" because our process is one of disassembly and removal as opposed to traditional manufacturing that is based on assembly of a product.  The procurement process is of paramount importance to salvage yards and even junkyards in Denver.  Do it poorly, and you will suffer.  Do it well, and you will thrive.  We have a dedicated employee to this specific component of the process and we use the most cutting edge software available to aid him. (Click Here to See Our Recent Auto Salvage Purchases) Inventory Now that the "raw inventory" or wrecked vehicle has been acquired and is at our facility, we need to physically inventory the vehicle and it's parts.  We'll actually assess the damage to every part that we put in stock and assign a grade to many of them to help our salespeople understand the condition of the part.  We inventory fewer parts than most people would think.  This is based on the value of the parts and our historical sales data.  We use a hand held computer to electronically enter the parts with descriptions into our yard management system.  This allows our sales people to easily look up parts when they're requested and access all the information about the vehicles and their parts.  Once the parts are in our inventory, they're broadcasted real time over the internet to hundreds of other salvage yards, shops, and even to the retail public on various websites.   Dismantling This is the heart of our "reverse manufacturing" process.  We start by testing any of the used auto parts that we're able to, emphasizing the more valuable components like the engine and transmission.  Next we'll systematically remove of all the fluids, gases, oils, etc., in the most environmentally sound way possible.  Finally, we'll actually remove the engine, transmission, and core parts.  The engine and transmission will be stocked in our warehouse so they can be delivered to our customers the day after they are ordered.  The removal of the engine and transmission is key to removal of most other parts on the vehicle.  Once they are removed, it is much easier to remove most of other parts from the vehicle.  Upon completion of the dismantling process, our lead dismantler will inspect the vehicles and verify that proper procedure has been applied and the vehicle is placed in a row in our yard. Sales After the dismantling process takes place, used auto parts will begin to sell off the vehicles at a rather quick pace.  We're primarily a wholesale provider of used auto parts, so we take hundreds of calls a day from body shops, insurance companies, independent repair shops, and dealerships, and process there orders as quickly as possible.  This is where the "Build to Order" process begins, as sales receive the orders, they will need to be filled by the next department.  The parts are not 100% ready to be sold at the time we receive the order, the order of the used auto part just drives the rest of the process at the salvage yard.  Through our yard management system, we create electronic work orders that prompt our production staff to pull the specific part that has been ordered.  Parts Removal Our parts pullers will now create a report from the work orders that will route them in the removal of all the correct parts.  This is one of the final steps in the "reverse manufacturing" process, as the part that has been ordered will be removed from the vehicle or picked from the warehouse.  The parts puller is responsible for doing basic quality control, pulling the correct used auto part, marking, and tagging the part with the routing information.  He'll then place the used auto part in our quality control department for cleaning, quality control, and routing. Quality Control This final and vital step in the process is one that separates some salvage yards from others.  It is important to look for any minor defects or problems before the part is delivered or picked up.  We also believe that parts should be cleaned and ready for the repairer to put right on the vehicle if possible.  All of our mechanical parts (engines, transmissions, rear axles, etc), suspension, and most any part under the hood are going to be pressure washed to remove oil, dirt, and grime.  Suspension will be painted for presentation and as a rust barrier.  Engines and transmissions undergo a more thorough preparation process to ensure quality presentation and an install ready product.  Lights and sheet metal products are cleaned and buffed for close inspection and presentation.  Our quality control department is critical in providing a final filter for defects or problems as well as making our product stand out. Delivery, Shipping, or Pick Up You can see now how the product has been "Built to Order".   It is ready to be used by one of our valuable customers.  We will deliver many of the used auto parts to customers within our delivery zone and we freight or ship a fair percentage of our products out as well.  We don't do residential delivery and some shops opt to pick up there parts in store.  We try to accommodate the needs of our customers as much as possible, and provide the product as quickly as we can.  We've recently opened up delivery of all of our used auto parts to Colorado Springs and Fort Collins.  This allows us to serve customers in these markets at a lower cost and for less money.  This is a win-win for our customers and we're already selling more used auto parts, engines, and transmissions in these markets. Vehicle Scrapping After a vehicle has spent a "cycle" at our yard and we've sold most of the used auto parts, it's time to put new inventory that was recently procured in its place.  In order to make room, we must "scrap" the vehicle and send it to be shredded and recycled.  We will remove a final round of core products from the vehicle and move it into a large container to be hauled off to the recycler or junkyard.  At the recycler, they will shred the remaining shell of the vehicle and separate the metals from everything else to be smelted and reused.  This is the absolute final element of recycling the wrecked vehicle as it is returned to the raw material state from which it was originally built. In the old days, a used engine or used transmission could carry a 30 day warranty and that was sufficient.  There were fewer options for garages and consumers to purchase from, so competition hadn't created better value offerings (like longer warranties) at this point.  Now days, there's more competition in our industry (as with most) and this has created a need for differentiation and an increase in value offerings.  This is great news for consumers. Not only are you getting more for your money, but you're able to use the standard warranty a company offers to help you differentiate them from the competition. I believe that most professional salvage yards with quality run-tested used auto parts should offer consumers a standard warranty of at least 90 days on the parts they sell.  This is a fairly common offering across the country among top quality salvage yards.  Any Team PRP Salvage Yard will offer you this as a standard, and Team PRP is the "Gold Standard" for salvage yards in my opinion (more on associations in another blog coming soon).  You won't find any old school junkyards in Team PRP!  If a recycler is selling engines or transmissions with only a 30 day warranty, I would look into their reputation with garages and dealerships (most likely one is doing your install, ask them) before you purchase from them.  Also, check if they're BBB Accredited and have an A+ Rating.  Because of "reputation management" companies and the wholesale nature of automotive recycling, these sources are more reliable than internet ratings and reviews. Step 1.  Vehicle is in a collision, too much damage to repair, so it's deemed a 'total loss'. Step 2.  Insured and insurance company decide whether to send the vehicle to a salvage auction or the insured retains the vehicle to sell on their own. Step 3.  Wrecked vehicle is purchased by the salvage yard, either through the insurance auction or through the insured consumer. (Click Here to Sell Your Car) Step 4. The wrecked vehicle goes through the intake and inventory process at the salvage yard.  All of the valuable and sellable used auto parts are graded and electronically catalogued into our used auto parts inventory system. Step 5. This is a big one...The wrecked vehicle has officially become a salvage vehicle.  It's off to be processed by one of our professional dismantlers.  All the hazardous fluids are drained, sold, or recycled.  Gas is used to power our fleet, oil is sold to be recycled into new motor oils and other uses, washer fluid, and everything else is captured and recycled. The engine, transmission, and a select few other auto parts will be removed and stocked in our warehouse.  The wheels and tires are removed to be sold and all of the suspension is loosened up for easy removal later.  The salvage vehicle is now a much lighter and it will be taken and safely placed in our salvage yard where it will remain for 9 months to a year. Step 6.  Being a salvage vehicle isn't easy, you sit there day after day, parts pullers are picking and pulling all of the different used auto parts off of you to sell to eager customers.  This is the step where most of the used auto parts are harvested and delivered to our customers. Step 7. End of life...Once the vehicle has run its course and had the time necessary to sell, we remove any of the 'core auto parts' that are left.  These are sold in bulk to company's that will recycle some of the components from these parts to create a remanufactured auto part. Step 8.  Smash and Recycle! Now we get our heavy equipment out and smash the vehicle down and place it in a huge recycling bin to be taken to the steel processor.  At the steel processor, the vehicle will be shredded and the different metals will be organized and either melted down or sold to a smelter to complete the recycling process. Mechanical Parts This group includes most of the auto parts that have moving components and mechanical function that are not electric.  These parts would include the engine, transmission, front or rear axle assembly, transfer case, differential, etc. The warranty you get or purchase on these parts requires the most consideration, as they are the most likely to have some sort of failure.  They have moving parts and wear parts that can eventually cause trouble or need replacement, which might be why you're in the market in the first place.  I believe you should accept nothing short of a 90 Day Warranty on these parts.  This is the industry standard and will give that part enough road time on your vehicle to know that everything is in proper operation.  Some automotive recyclers will offer extended warranties for up to 1-3 years.  This can certainly be considered if you'd like to insure a major purchase like and engine or transmission for a longer period of time.  Some factors may be how long you hope to driver the vehicle, how many miles are on the vehicle and the replacement part, etc.  Many recyclers will also offer a Labor Warranty.  A labor warranty on a used part can be a great value, should there be an issue with the replacement part.  Given the high cost of labor to replace an engine, transmission, or other major component, it may make sense to purchase a labor warranty with your product.  Labor warranties are basically an insurance plan that covers or helps to cover the cost of labor in event of a defect.  This type of coverage is not standard in the used auto parts business, but may be offered by certain recyclers. Electric Parts This group of parts would include the radio, starter, alternator, window switches, and other electric automotive parts.  Some recyclers refuse to warranty these products because of the finicky nature of auto electric and a fear that the part will just be used for diagnostic purposes.  I personally don't think consumers should stand for this.  In used auto parts, there is always the possibility that there is an issue with the part.  This risk should be mitigated by the used parts dealer in the way of a warranty.  Some recyclers will offer a 30 Day Warranty on everything, including electrical components, which is fine because you still have the opportunity to install and test the product.  Personally, I think a Standard 90 Day Warranty on electrical auto parts makes the most sense and covers the consumer appropriately.  This is certainly something to be aware of if you have a Hybrid vehicle and are doing major electrical repair, replacing the hybrid battery or the inverter/converter.  These parts can be very pricey and a solid warranty should be part of the purchase.   Body and Suspension Parts These are the rugged warriors of the vehicle.  Generally speaking, these products are only damaged in a collision, although some suspension parts can have components that will wear out over time.  The warranty isn't quite as pressing with these products, as they are not as likely to fail after a number of months or miles put on the vehicle.  At Central Auto Parts, we still put a 90 Day Standard Warranty on these products to allow our customers some time and flexibility should there be an issue with one of these parts types. Fluids Everyone knows that there are many fluids that are necessary to make your vehicle go.  Engines require oil, gas, and anti-freeze.  Transmissions require a specialized oil to ensure that the gears are lubricated.  The list goes on and on.  Used gasoline is found in 90% of auto salvage.  At our facility, we reuse this gasoline in our delivery trucks and yard vehicles.  Our goal is to reuse all of the gasoline we produce at our salvage yard.  We're able to accomplish this with ease.  Other facilities processing auto salvage may choose to resell there gasoline to companies that clean and reprocess it.  Engine and transmission oil is drained and captured from all of the auto salvage that we process.  This used oil is sold to companies to consolidate it and sell it to processors or refiners to recycle it.  Anti-freeze can be reused after it goes through a filtration process.  Some salvage yards choose to process anti-freeze on-site and sell it back to there customers.  Once we extract anti-freeze from our auto salvage cars and trucks we store it and sell it to a 3rd party processor.  All of these major fluids are recycled and reused for one thing or another. Core Products for Remanufacture Most auto salvage will have many "core parts", which are parts that remanufacture's rebuild and resell.  Some common "core parts" are starters, alternators, compressors, and power steering pumps.  You'll see this products at new parts stores branded by the store itself.  Those products originally came out of auto salvage cars and trucks, were sold to rebuilder's or remanufacturers and the bad components were replaced, they were cleaned up, and now are ready for your vehicle. Catalytic Converters Also called "cats", these are the parts on your exhaust system that clean and scrub the exhaust from your vehicle before it leaves the vehicle and goes into our precious air.  They contain Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium, which are precious metals.  The "cats" are removed and resold to consolidators or "decanners" who remove the precious metals and resell it on the metals market for reuse. Metals After you process a salvage car or truck, remove the parts you need for resale, remove the fluids, then your left with the residual metal shell.  These shells are purchased by metal recycling companies, crushed down, shredded, and then separated into the different types of salvage metals for resale.  There is mostly steel and aluminum, but traces of iron, copper and other metals are found in auto salvage. So, that's the crash course on auto salvage by products and recyclable materials that are recycled and reused.  As you can see, auto salvage is a very environmentally friendly business that is properly disposing of and recycling wrecked cars and trucks. It's meaning originally came from the high seas where it was used to describe recovering a ship and it's cargo from certain loss.  Today, we use the term readily to describe recovering and saving what is left of salvage automobiles. You would be amazed at what a competent salvage yard is able to save and recover from these wrecked vehicles and junk cars.  Obviously, we're in the business of selling the used auto parts or salvage parts from these vehicles.  So we're charged with removing any and all of the parts that have resale value.  Body parts like doors, fenders, and hoods are saved, headlights and taillights, and of course the used engines and transmissions.  These parts account for a lot of what is salvaged but that's just the beginning. Salvage yards needed to get more efficient and make the most of the salvage vehicles over the last few years.  So we've found ways to recover our costs by "salvaging" even more of the vehicles.  Core products are removed from the vehicle and sold to rebuilders to remanufacture them into another reusable auto parts.  These range from starters and alternators all the way to the visors.  By removing and wholesaling these products, we can utilize parts of the vehicle that aren't cost effective for us to remove and sell individually and would otherwise end up in the trash. Wrecked vehicles contain many fluids and other recoverable materials.  For instance, all of our salvage vehicles have the gasoline drained and that gas is used in our delivery trucks.  The oils are recovered and resold to companies that recycle them into other petroleum based products and even recycled motor oil. Wed, 16 Nov 2016 06:00:00 GMT http://usedautopartsdenver.co/blog/7082/Salvage-Yards---As-Green-as-it-Gets http://usedautopartsdenver.co/blog/7079/Get-Your-Car-or-Truck-Ready-for-the-Summer-Heat blog Everyone knows that winter driving and frigid temperatures pose a threat to there car or truck.  So we prepare our vehicles wisely so that they don't end up at a junkyard with a bunch of smashed up used auto parts hanging off of them.  One thing we forget about our cars, is how sensitive they can be to the heat of summer.  In Denver, we get very hot days in the summer and this time of year can be a peak season for salvage yards because of it.  Heat can cause issues with many of the systems of your vehicle, namely the engine and transmission. So, read this blog and get your car, truck, or SUV ready for high temps of a Colorado summer. Start with Tires In Colorado, many people will swap there tires when winter hits with snow tires or studded tires.  This definitely helps your car or truck handle during the cold days of winter but can be detrimental once the snow and ice have melted away.  This is just a reminder to put your summer tires back on now that your car is navigating the hot streets and highways of Denver.  Your vehicle will handle better, get better gas mileage, and be quicker and more agile with proper tires.  A set of nice all-season tires can be a good option and save the hassle of taking the wheels and tires of your car or truck twice a year. Cooling System Your cars cooling system is critical during this time of year.  If it's not cooling properly, your vehicle is at risk of over heating.  We sell tons of used engines every year to consumers that had there engine overheat.  This is is the most common problem that occurs this time of year that can turn your daily driver into a junk car.  Normally, the cooling system should keep your car operating around 200 degrees Fahrenheit, but higher temperatures can cause the coolant to reach sweltering temperatures of up to 250 degrees, increasing the chances of overheating. This is why once summer arrives, checking coolant levels as well as the condition of the cooling components is a great practice for your car or truck.  It may be time to have the cooling system flushed to protect the engine.  You should do this every couple of years.  Check the condition of the coolant.  If it looks cloudy or dirty, then it's probably time to take the vehicle in for a flush.  Professional repair shops will be able to quickly diagnose any other problems with the cooling system and suggest replacement auto parts or additional service. Check the A/C Air Conditioning systems have a tendency to fail or need service this time of year also.  As the weather heats, I turned on the A/C in my car and it was blowing hot air.  Fortunately, I didn't need any major service or used auto parts.  Just a simple recharge took care of the issue and I can drive comfortably now.  It's a good practice to run the A/C at least once every time you drive your vehicle and check if it still blows cold air. Also, pay attention to any strange noises or odors whenever the A/C is running. If your car has a cabin filter installed, have it checked as well as cleaned as necessary. If the A/C blows hot air or you suspect problems in the system, don't hesitate to have it undergo a thorough inspection by a professional. Time for an Oil Change Believe it or not, engine oil can help draw heat away from the engine as well.  As oil ages in your car or trucks engine, it get's thinner and is less effective at lubricating the engine and aiding in cooling the engine.  Check your owners manual for oil change specifications and be aware of when your next service is scheduled.  It's ok to bump your vehicles service up a month or so to beat the heat.  This is cheap insurance for the coming months of a hot Denver summer. Know the Part This might seem obvious, and the basics of this are pretty self explanatory.  Of course, I'm not talking about knowing that you need an engine, I am talking about knowing the details.  When you start searching online or if you were to call a salvage yard, there is going to be some information that you will need in order to get the correct engine.   First, have the vehicle VIN ready.  Some salvage yards require the VIN because it is so critical in understanding the customers needs.  There may be a character in your VIN that tells the website, or the used auto parts professional some critical information about your vehicle and the engine that you are in need of.   Know the engine size.  This is likely the most critical piece of information to have about a used or remanufactured engine.  This information will generally be right on top of the engine and clear to view when you pop the hood.  The measurement of engines is liters (L), so you'll see something like 4.0L or 2.4L on the valve cover on the top side of the engine.  If you don't find it there, look for the emissions sticker on the under side of the hood.  This sticker will also show you the year and the engine size. Know the transmission type.  This one is easy, because most drivers know if they are driving a stick or an automatic transmission.  This is just a question that will come up a lot when you are searching for a used engine online.  On most used parts search websites, you will see MT or AT next to the options to select.  MT = Manual Transmission, AT = Automatic Transmission. Know the Vendor As with anything, you want to know who you're buying from.  If they're a local vendor, like one of the salvage yards in Denver, you can generally still buy from them online.  Some consumers prefer to shop this way, and there is nothing wrong with that.  Find the salvage yards website and get some information on there warranty and business practices so that you get familiar and comfortable with them.  If you're buying online from a national seller like eBay, then you can use there ranking system to get an idea of the quality of the vendor.  You may be able to save money on shipping costs and headaches if you buy from a local salvage yard, because we are here and can handle warranty issues promptly and even go to the shop to assist with warranty issues if they occur. Core Deposit - The core deposit is a sum of money charged to consumers by sellers of used engines or remanufactured engines.  It can be anywhere from $50-$500 depending on the engine that is purchased.  The core deposit is used to secure the return of the customers old engine.  Your old, damaged engine or "core" has some value, but in order for that value to be realized, the "core" has to be processed and organized.  Salvage yards are experts in organizing and processing core engines, so we use a core deposit as way to secure the damaged engine that is being replaced.  The core deposit is returned to the customer when they bring there core engine back to the automotive recycler.  This is also a sure way to see that the core engine will be recycled properly in the most environmentally sound way possible.  Dealing with a local salvage yard can be the pickup and processing of your core less costly and easier to do. Match the long-block with your old one.  Make sure they are exactly the same. After you have the old engine out, set it next to the used engine and identify which components need to switched over. If you find damaged components in your inspection (timing cover, oil pan, etc.), simply swap the components with your old engine.  Generally, bolt-on accessories can be swapped with no issue.  Don't install a replacement salvage engine with damaged parts.  This may cause the used engine to fail prematurely. Inspect timing components on engine, if miles are over factory specification for a timing belt or chain, replace timing components.  Best practice is to always replace the timing belt. It's generally inexpensive to do when the engine is already out of the vehicle. Inspect all gaskets for bolt on accessories and replace any gaskets that look brittle or are leaking. Change over any bolt on accessories needed off your old engine.  Installation Tips and Guidelines Flush cooling system prior to installing engine to remove any debris left over from previous engine.  Clean or replace oil strainer and pick up tube screen.  Replace oil pan gasket & rear main seal.  Drain & replace engine oils to manufacturers suggested levels.  Replace oil filter.  Timing belts/chains, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, fluids, and seals are routine maintenance items and should be replaced at the time of installation and at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended service intervals.  Replace any water hoses or vacuum lines that need replacing.  Prior to starting engine prime oil system to check to be sure you have oil pressure.  Proper operation of the cooling and electrical system must be checked during the installation of products that can be affected by those systems.  Replace valve cover gasket as needed.  Install new belts and hoses. It's always important not to rush, especially with our harsh Colorado road conditions. Being behind schedule is recipe for driving too fast for the conditions.  It always pays to give yourself a little extra time to get to your destination and to call whomever your meeting with if you are behind schedule.   Remove all snow from your vehicle before each trip. Snow hanging from your tires can cause problems when you least expect it. Make sure you do a walk around your vehicle to kick off excess snow and ice behind your tires and to remove all snow from creating blind spots in your windshield.  Remove snow from your hood, grill area, and all rear windows as well.  Sometimes we neglect these areas but they can create gaps in your visibility and lead to a collision.  As you accelerate snow can fly off the hood and make tough visibility even more difficult.  Don't end up with a wrecked vehicle; clean the snow off your car completely.   Avoid using overdrive and cruise control on slippery roads.  When driving in snow conditions it is important to stay in control and remain calm. Being in complete control of your vehicle by not being in overdrive or cruise control is crucial if you need to be on high alert.   SLOW DOWN and wear your seat belt. New OEM Replacement Engines are on option, but we're going to focus on "Remanufactured Engines" and "Used OEM Engines" in this article.  This is simply because New OEM Engines are so expensive that it is usually not a viable option for a consumer in a vehicle that is out of warranty and likely more than 5-6 years old.   Used Engines or Recycled Engines   Used or Recycled Engines are a great option for most consumers.  They provide a quality option at price that is generally 40% to 60% less costly than a new engine.  Professional salvage yards will test there engines as thoroughly as possible (See previous blog, "Quality Testing Engines and Transmissions" for more info).  Most of the time running the engine before the vehicle is dismantled is very good way to test the quality and function of the engine.  If for some reason we can't run the engine at Central, we'll do a compression test to make sure the engine is good.  One thing to consider is that using a recycled engine is the most environmentally sound option.  The manufacturing process to provide a used engine is minimal and therefore the additional impact on th environment and use of resources is much less.  Another good thing about used engines is that there are many variables and options to choose from.  How much you want to spend, how many miles are on your vehicle, and what kind of warranty you want will dictate which option is right for you.  There will generally be a range of engines with different mileages available.  The lower mileage engines will be more costly than a higher mileage engine.  You can also extend the warranty of used engines at most automotive recyclers or salvage yards in Denver.  At Central, we offer a 90 Day Warranty as our standard but a consumer has the option to extend the warranty for 6 months, a year, or even a lifetime! We haven't figured out exactly why, but we're still sure to see vehicles titled in other states at our auctions on a regular basis).  Anyway, the insurance company will tow all the wrecked vehicles and auto salvage they acquire into the auction.    At this point, the vehicle is analyzed and a report on the salvage vehicle is built by the auction.  The report will be complete with a damage assessment, images, VIN information, etc.  The more inclusive the auto salvage report is, the better the salvage yards can assess the value of the wrecked vehicle.  It is vital to know which used auto parts will be useable and which parts were damaged in the accident.  Now that the salvage vehicles have been properly analyzed and used parts information is available, the wrecked vehicles are posted with there "Lot #" on the auctions website.    Now the bidding begins.  Some salvage yards in Denver will calculate there bid amount and enter it as a "proxy bid".  A "proxy bid" allows you to enter your bid and not participate in the live salvage auction.  If your "proxy bid" is the highest after the live bids have been placed, then you'll win the auto salvage vehicle.  One of Colorado's auto salvage auctions still has an individual verbally call the auction, which is kind of cool.  The other two auto salvage auctions in Colorado have computer operated auction calls.  Once you win the auto salvage vehicle, you can opt to either have the auction house tow it to your salvage yard or you can hire a tow company to retrieve the salvage vehicle for you.  This is of course if you can't pickup the auto salvage yourself in a company tow truck.   This is the true story of how auto salvage yards in Denver keep the vehicles coming.  It's important for us to have good avenues for acquiring auto salvage and the auctions in Colorado have been providing that for many years.
